Comments in Parent Portal

Post Teacher Comments to the Family Portal (i.e. for Parents & Guardians)

Teacher comments can be posted to the Family Portal using the Student Log. These comments appear for parents, guardians, and other student family members who have been given access to the SchoolFront system.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Configure a "Family Portal" Log Category (Administrator)

Before teachers can add comments to the Student Log which will appear in the Family Portal, a school staff member with Administrator permissions must configure one or more Log Categories to appear in the Family Portal.

  1. Login to SchoolFront as an Administrator.

  2. Click Feature Administration in the left navigation menu.

  3. Under Students, click Log Categories.

  4. Click the New Student Log Category link.

  5. Enter a Category Name that will make it clear that this is a category that will make the comment viewable to the family members of students such as "Comments for Families," or "Parent/Guardian Messages," or "Viewable to Families."

  6. Check the checkbox labeled "Viewable To Families."

  7. Enter an optional Category Description.

  8. Click the Insert button to add the category to the system.

  9. The category will now be available to all teachers in the Student Log section when they login to SchoolFront.

Student Log entries created by teachers under any category with the "Viewable To Families" checkbox checked will be immediately viewable by members of the associated student's family who have access to the SchoolFront system.

You can have as many or as few Log Categories as you want with the "Viewable To Families" checkbox checked, just make sure that it is very clear to teachers so that they don't enter logs that they do not want family to see using a "Viewable to Families" category accidentally.

Add a Comment to the Student Log That Will Appear in the Family Portal (Teacher)

Once an administrator at your school has configured the Student Log to support the publishing of some log comments to the Family Portal, teachers can begin logging comments for this purpose.

  1. Login to SchoolFront as a Teacher.

  2. In the left-navigation menu, click Student Log.

  3. At the top of the screen in the green boxes, select the Course for which you would like to add comments for the Family Portal.

  4. Click the New Student Log Entry link.

  5. Choose a Student from the drop-down menu (only the students enrolled in the course will appear in the menu).

  6. For the Log Date enter today's date (you can also back-date if you want).

  7. In the Student Log Category drop-down menu choose one of the Log Categories that your school's Administrator)s) added that will publish comments to the Family Portal.

    Note: If you do not know which Log Category to use, contact your school's system administrator for help because he/she is the one who must configure the categories.

  8. In the Log Entry field, type your comments (remember that these will be immediately viewable by family members when you are done).

  9. Click the Insert button.

  10. The comment will be immediately viewable by family members related to the student for whom you added the log entry.
